Tuesday 16 October, 2018RESPONSE: Illustrations by students from Northumbria University’s Graphic Design degree in response to, and in aid of, Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland

In September 2017, Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland (RCTN), in collaboration with the illustration pathway on BA(Hons) Graphic Design degree at Northumbria University, challenged 2nd year illustration students to come up with designs for new saleable merchandise to help the North-East charity towards its ambitious target of raising £40,000 in its 40th anniversary year.

RCTN set the illustration students three key words to interpret into the merchandise; three important words that most women use to describe how RCTN makes them feel after their counselling… HOPE, SOLIDARITY, and LIBERATION.

Entitled RESPONSE: the exhibition of work by the students opened on Friday 12 October at the Globe Gallery on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle, running until Monday 22 October, with an evening reception on Thursday 18 October between 5pm and 8pm that is open to the general public.

The students each chose a merchandise category from the list of

Greetings cards, postcards, stationery sets, art prints

T-shirts, scarves, tote bags

Ceramics, cups, plates, mugs

and then they each created six illustrations. In the exhibition, each illustrator has at least two of those illustrations displayed. Each framed illustration is for sale with the student donating 33% of its sale to RCTN, but 100% of the proceeds from the merchandise will go to the charity.

The illustration students exhibiting in this exhibition are:

* Josh Aitken

* Hung-Ling Chen

* Asa Hindarto

* Flora Marriott

* Sarah Montgomery

* Kyle Mooney

* Calum Scott

Josh Aitken’s illustrations were chosen by RCTN to go forward as the design for all the merchandise and will be available to purchase from Globe Gallery,

Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland opened on 17 November 1978, making it one of the oldest Rape Crisis centres in England and Wales.

Initially known as Tyneside Rape Crisis; the charity expanded over the years and now offers services not only in Newcastle but also in Northumberland, where it is known as Grace Rape Crisis Centre.

Rape Crisis centres are women-led and offer a range of support, advocacy, counselling and information in a women-only safe space. Some also provide separate spaces and services for male sexual violence survivors and/or for men who are supporting a survivor.

Holiday House NYC 11th Anniversary Interior Designer Showcase

When:
October 24- December 2nd, 2018

Where
118 E 76th street New York, NY 10075

Features:
Holiday House NYC is an inspiring interior design exhibition featuring the industry’s leading designers and brands. For its 11th anniversary, the highly acclaimed showcase tapped luxury interior design firm, Interior Marketing Group (IMG) to reimagine the home’s grand staircase and property’s six landing areas. Ultimately, Holiday House is a celebration of life, beauty and optimism as an antidote to breast cancer. For each showhouse, designers are given the challenge of creating a space that is inspired by a holiday or day of personal meaning to them. Rather than designing for a traditional holiday, IMG has chosen to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

IMG is one of 20 talented design firms that will transform each room of the newly-built 32-foot-wide mansion, creating luxuriously appointed spaces and innovative designs. Design chairs for this year’s showhouse include celebrity interior designers Thom Felicia, Carson Kressley, and Vincente Wolf, fitness mogul Tracy Anderson, and Committee Chair Christopher Hyland.

Lead by celebrity interior designer, Cheryl Eisen, IMG’s “Rise of the Fempire,” installation will honor survivors, women empowerment and prominent advocates for women’s health. Partners for the project include Arteriors, Bokara Rugs, Chista, Costikyan, GM Star, PB Paints, Phillip Jeffries and STARK Carpet who are pivotal in bringing IMG’s vision to life.

Holiday House was founded by 21-year veteran breast cancer survivor, Iris Danker who donates all gala and ticket sales proceeds to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF). The showhouse will open to the public on October 24 in a luxurious, new eight-bedroom limestone townhouse at 118 East 76th Street on one of New York’s most beautiful blocks.

The Opening Night Gala, slated to take place Tuesday, October 23rd, represents the New York interior design world’s unofficial kick off for the holiday season and offers industry insiders a first glimpse at the magnificently re-imagined townhouse.

Noted Bollywood production house Yash Raj Films has been grabbing the eyeballs recently due to the sexual harassment allegations against their Talent and Business Head - Ashish Patil, in the wake of the #MeToo movement which has taken the film fraternity by storm. In a #MeToo expose, an anonymous survivor has opened up on social media about her disturbing encounter with Ashish Patil, sharing the details of her ordeal.

In the wake of the allegations, while YRF has sacked Ashish, the Twitterati are visivly enraged and are now urging popular YRF talents like Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra to take a strong stand.

In a Twitter trend 'Ashish Patil', netizens demanded that B-Town's gen-next stars voice a strong opinion on the #MeToo movement.  While India has woken up to take a strong stand in support of #MeToo , with Bollywood trend setters like Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Kajol, Kangana Ranaut and others who have disassociated themselves with those who're allegedly accused of sexual harassment, Bollywood's gen-next steers clear from voicing their opinion on the issue.

-*Here's what netizens had to say -*-

India's very own Me Too movement has hit Bollywood, unraveling some of B-Town's most dirty secrets and exposing industry heavy weights. The latest one to join the line is the gut wrenching expose of YRF Talent and Business Head - Ashish Patil. Known to be one of the most influential names running the show at Yash Raj Films, Ashish Patil has been accused by a woman with allegations of sexual exploitation.

An anonymous survivor has taken solace of social media to share her story of sexual harassment at workplace. An activist first tweeted about the survivor's story with her consent, sharing the disturbing encounter with Ashish Patil inside YRF office premises. This led to the accused being sent on an administrative leave.

The survivor claimed to approach Ashish Patil for work when she was allegedly asked for sexual favours on the pretext of landing her a job. Post the empty promises of giving her work, the girl exposed the industry heavy weight that lead to him being sacked by YRF.

USA Gymnastics President Steps Down Days After Taking The Job Watch VideoAnother high ranking official at USA Gymnastics is stepping down.

Interim President Mary Bono resigned after less than a week on the job.

Multiple athletes criticized Bono's appointment for a variety of reasons, including the fact that her law firm represented USA Gymnastics during the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal.

Olympic gold medalist and Nassar survivor Aly Raisman questioned USAG on Twitter saying, "Why hire someone associated with the firm that helped cover up our abuse?"

And Nassar survivor Sarah Klein said by hiring Bono, "USAG is making a MOCKERY of our abuse." Klein has called for the the organization to have their certification stripped, and to completely clean house.

In her statement, Bono said her "withdrawal comes in the wake of personal attacks that, left undefended, would have made my leading USAG a liability for the organization."

That's in response to Olympic gold-medalist Simone Biles calling out Bono for tweeting a photo that showed her defacing a pair of Nike shoes. Bono posted that tweet after Nike unveiled its new ad campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick.

Nike is also a sponsor of Biles, who sarcastically posted to Twitter, "don't worry, it's not like we needed a smarter USA gymnastics president or any sponsors or anything." Bono has since deleted the tweet and apologized.

How Genprex took an abandoned pipeline drug and turned it into Oncoprex, an innovative treatment for non-small cell lung cancer

“Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength.” –Old Tibetan saying When Rodney Varner made the jump from corporate lawyer to chairman and CEO of biotech startup Genprex Inc (NASDAQ:GNPX) and its promising treatment for non-small cell lung cancer, it wasn’t just because he believed in the science. For him, it was also personal. A cancer survivor, Varner had long been a believer in the science behind Genprex’s lead drug candidate, Oncoprex, having previously served as legal counsel for several biotech startups, including one called Introgen Therapeutics. So, when Introgen couldn’t raise enough money to develop its lead drug candidate at the height of the financial crisis in 2008 and subsequently went bankrupt, Varner formed a group that included leading scientists and former Introgen CEO David Nance to rescue what they believed was the most promising undeveloped science in Introgen’s pipeline: a gene called TUSC2 (“Tumor Suppressor Gene 2” also known as “FUS1”) delivered to tumor cells by means of a leading edge nanoparticle delivery system, which together became the basis for Oncoprex, a potential treatment for non-small cell lung cancer. That investment group became the nucleus of Genprex. The team now includes Dr Julien Pham as president and chief operating officer, and Ryan Confer as chief financial officer. Dr. Jack Roth continues as chairman of the company’s Scientific Advisory Board, and Nobel laureate Dr. James Rothman continues as a strategic advisor to the board of directors. Nance, who also fought a personal battle with cancer, left the company in 2012 and later passed away. “We already had the knowledge,” Varner told Proactive Investors, “and we were able to move quickly to acquire the technology because bankruptcy is not a favorable environment to develop or market biotechnologies.” How Oncoprex works Oncoprex was a technology that Roth, a pioneer in gene therapy, wanted to pursue for several reasons: one, research demonstrated that TUSC2 is a powerful tumor suppressor gene and, two, Oncoprex has fewer side effects with less toxicity than other lung cancer drugs and can be administered systemically to cancer patients. Oncoprex is basically the TUSC2 gene wrapped in a cholesterol nanoparticle that is engineered to target cancer cells. “It’s a systemic targeted approach,” Varner explains. “The reason we say ‘targeted’ is because the lipid nanoparticles are designed to be attracted like a magnet to the cancer cells and have an opposite charge.” The nanoparticles are attracted by the opposite electrical charge of tumors, and they pass more easily through immature blood vessels that grow quickly around tumors. That’s a big advantage because the nanotechnology can be injected intravenously, so it goes through the whole body, as opposed to many traditional gene therapies using viral delivery systems that have been injected directly into tumors. Thus, Oncoprex can attack metastatic tumors in hard to reach places or are too small to detect. The Nanoparticles are absorbed by tumor cells at rate 10 times to 25 times higher than normal cells, but have little or no effect on normal cells, so toxicity to patients is low relative to other lung cancer drugs. Genprex has an innovative gene-therapy platform that explores the therapeutic benefit of multiple tumor suppressor genes, multiple potentially synergistic combinations with other cancer drugs, and potential application to multiple types of cancer. So, a natural question is what is so special about the TUSC2 gene in treating non-small cell lung cancer? Varner says it’s because it expresses proteins that suppress cancer. Eighty percent of lung cancer patients show a deficiency in the TUSC2 tumor-suppressor gene, so lung cancer is an obvious target for those patients who don’t respond to traditional treatments. Early-stage success After an early trial showed that Oncoprex alone benefitted some patients with non-small-cell lung cancer, researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, a longtime research partner of Genprex, found “strong synergy” in preclinical research showing that Oncoprex combined with an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor such as erlotinib, also known as Tarceva, is more effective than either drug used alone. Of 23 patients evaluated in the initial Phase 1 clinical trial, Oncoprex on its own showed a benefit in five of the 23 patients with Stage IV metastatic lung cancer that received two or more trial doses; three saw tumor reductions and one patient had a complete response by PET scan, with lung cancer in full remission. That patient, Varner says, used the additional years of life to see a grandchild born and she earned an additional college degree. “That’s really unusual in the drug-development process, to be able to have an experience like that in late-stage lung cancer.” The success of that trial led to the current Phase 1/2 trial of Oncoprex combined with Tarceva, a best-selling EGFR inhibitor. Though EGFR inhibitors are widely used to fight lung cancer as targeted therapies, they only benefit patients with the EGFR mutation (EGFR positive), and that’s only about 10% to 15% of Caucasians and about 30% to 50% of Asians. (Varner has no data for any other groups currently.) “Our research indicates that we can sensitize patients who don’t have the mutation so that they can benefit from EGFR inhibitors such as Tarceva,” Varner says. Expanding the business proposition But that, Varner says, is just one leg of the company’s business proposition. “By adding our drug to an EGFR inhibitor like Tarceva, we believe that we will be able to expand the patient populations that receive those drugs and benefit from them,” he says. Another leg addresses patients receiving targeted therapies who almost inevitably become resistant to the popular EGFR inhibitors over time. Research indicates that Oncoprex can “re-sensitize” patients who become resistant to Tarceva, which may expand the number of people who can benefit from the drug and prolong the benefit for those who already receive it. WATCH: Genprex reaches deal with Aldevron for more plasmid DNA for expanding clinical program Preclinical data indicates Oncoprex is also synergistic when combined with immunotherapies such as PD-1 (programmed death-1) and CTLA-4 (cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4), a protein receptor that downregulates immune responses. A Genprex study of lung cancer in mice shows that combining Oncoprex with these immunotherapies is more effective than when they are administered individually. As a result, Varner says clinical trials are being planned to combine Oncoprex with a popular immunotherapy such as Bristol-Myers Squibb’s (NYSE:BMY) Opdivo or Yervoy. Insert Oncoprex into a combined worldwide market for targeted therapies and immunotherapies predicted to reach about US$26bn by 2025, and Oncoprex has the makings of a global blockbuster. In the pipeline The company is well-prepared for current and upcoming clinical trials as Oncoprex continues its Phase 2 trial and potentially adds an additional clinical trial of Oncoprex combined with one or more immunotherapies. Genprex went public in April of this year, listing on the Nasdaq under the ticker “GNPX” and raising US$6.4mn. A private investment in public equity, or PIPE, in May raised an additional US$10mln. With a burn rate of US$400,000 per month, the company has about two years of dry powder to conduct its next round of trials. READ: Genprex secures more capital to bring Oncoprex to market But Varner and his team are not sitting back and waiting. They are executing an ambitious plan to add an additional clinical trial combining Oncoprex with an immunotherapy while exploring expanding the current Phase 2 trial into an approval trial and applying for Fast Track, Breakthrough, or RMAT designation from the US Food and Drug Administration. Varner says he expects feedback from the FDA in the next three to six months, but if the regulator rejects the accelerated approval route, then Varner says Genprex will face a longer and more expensive path via a randomized Phase 3 trial. And that would require additional capital. Potential headwinds But one obstacle made be tougher to overcome is that of perception. The company has been criticized openly on a popular investor website for its connection to Introgen, which Varner is quick to dispute. Only one member of Genprex’s original management team was employed by Introgen, he points out, and that was one of the people who believed in the science the most: David Nance, who has since passed away. None of Genprex’s current executives was employed by Introgen. Of the four or five drugs in Introgen’s pipeline, Genprex only obtained the rights to Oncoprex, which was in a much earlier stage and is based on totally different science than Introgen’s lead drug candidate at the time, which was in multiple Phase 3 clinical trials. “When we acquired TUSC2, it was early in Phase 1 – it’s a totally different technology than Introgen’s lead technology, a P53 gene therapy,” Varner explains. “And our technology uses a different delivery system. Introgen’s lead drug candidate was delivered by a modified virus that was injected directly into tumors; whereas Genprex uses a non-viral delivery system that is delivered systemically and thus can reach metastatic tumors and those too small to be recognized, or too difficult to reach for injection. So, we took a different, early Phase 1 gene with a different delivery system and got it on favorable terms from the bankruptcy estate.“ As for Varner, it’s clear he is a true believer in Oncoprex and the science behind it. He took over as CEO in 2012 when Nance stepped down and only started drawing a salary in 2016. “I was successful and made a good living as a lawyer for 30 years,” says Varner. “But after having cancer myself, it became even more important to me to see Genprex succeed.” Contact Paul Curcio at paul.curcio@proactiveinvestors.com Follow him on Twitter @GoCurcioGo Reported by Proactive Investors 20 hours ago.

Sexual Abuse Survivors Seek Help in Record Numbers - Tips from Dr. Stephen J Oreski on How to Help a Survivor

$

When a high-profile case, such as the Cosby case or the recent sex abuse scandals in the Catholic church enters the news cycle, calls to sexual assault hotline increase dramatically.

PARAMUS, N.J. (PRWEB) October 17, 2018

The recent Supreme Court hearings and the nomination process resulted in an increase of 338% to sexual assault hotlines (RAINN, October 1, 2018). Sexual abuse survivors are seeking help in record numbers not seen before.

“We have seen a tremendous increase in clients reaching out for assistance and seeking counseling for the first time,” states Dr. Stephen J. Oreski, LCSW, a psychotherapist specializing in treating those impacted by sexual violence. “When one person speaks out regarding their experience with sexual violence, often others will come forward." Speaking out reduces the stigma associated with identifying as a survivor of sexual abuse. It can be extremely difficult for survivors to come forward and share their story. They may feel ashamed, concerned that they won’t be believed, or worried they’ll be blamed.

If someone you know has been impacted by sexual violence, or shares that they are a survivor, Dr. Oreski offers some guidance on how to respond to the disclosure:· Leave any “why” questions or investigations to the experts. Your job is to support the person. Be careful not to interpret calmness as a sign that the event did not occur. Everyone responds to traumatic events differently. The best thing you can do is to believe them.
· Survivors may blame themselves, especially if they know the perpetrator personally. Remind the survivor, even more than once, that they are not to blame.
· Acknowledge that the experience has affected their life. Phrases like “This must be really tough for you” and “I’m so glad you are sharing this with me” help to communicate empathy
· Let the survivor know that you are there for them and willing to listen to their story if they are comfortable sharing it. Assess if there are people in their life they feel comfortable speaking to and remind them that there are service providers who will be able to support them as they heal from the experience.

Dr. Stephen J. Oreski & Associates is a psychotherapy and counseling practice dedicated to working with survivors of sexual violence and their loved ones, offers a safe and healing environment to address the issue surrounding all forms sexual violence.
